What can I use without sync?

Almost everything. Notes, journal, tasks, projects, calendar, inbox, search, the graph, and the AI agent all run on your machine. Sync only adds access from more than one device and an encrypted copy off your computer.

Can I bring my own AI?

Yes, and AI stays off until you turn it on. Point the agent at a local model through any OpenAI-compatible server (Ollama, LM Studio, and llama.cpp have presets), or use the Claude Code, Codex, or Antigravity CLI you already pay for. Voice memos transcribe on-device with Whisper, or with your own OpenAI key. API keys are protected by your OS keychain. With a local model, nothing leaves your machine.

Where is my data stored?

In a vault folder you choose. Notes are plain Markdown files with YAML frontmatter, readable in any text editor. Tasks, projects, and the search index live in SQLite databases inside the hidden .memry folder of that same vault.

Can I keep my vault on my own NAS?

Yes. The vault is a normal folder, so it can live wherever you choose, including your own NAS.

Is my data secure?

Your local vault stays on your device. When you turn on Sync, everything is encrypted with XChaCha20-Poly1305 before upload, using keys derived on your machine. Our servers store ciphertext and cannot read your notes.

Yes. Hosted memrynote Sync is end-to-end encrypted and starts at $5/month. A self-hosted sync server is on the roadmap.

What happens to my notes if I cancel Sync?

Nothing. Sync pauses and the local app keeps working with every note, task, and journal entry you already have. Turn Sync back on whenever you want your devices connected again.
